It's sure easy for these things to take on a life of their own!!

This is my input:
20-049 has no purpose as an ICOM control cable.


20-289  RS-232 to CIV
LOOKS like the above (20-049) but has circuitry in the RS-232 housing the 
take care of the conversion to CIV level.
I have used it and it works with my 746pro and 706.  This cable is on 
close-out also and if you can find it, is only a couple of bucks.

20-047  USB to CIV
This cable plugs into a USB port. It comes with a driver (which can also be 
download from Radio Shack web site) and works FB on both my rigs (as 
mentioned above).
