Hi Gary --
I couldn't agree with you more but that's the way mine was set up. It certainly didn't make any sense to me either. I removed about a 1/2" piece of outer covering to gain access to the wires and used phono needle probes to get to the wires inside.
(Gosh, I wonder how many people now-a-days actually know what a phono needle really is?)
Once I saw how mine was wired I knew I was out out luck using it as a CI-V interface device.
Perhaps I had a cable constructed by someone anxious to go on their coffee break, or saki break.......... or some kind of break.
