It's been a long time but I think I used diagonal cutters to bend one of the 
crimps and then pried on the cover with my pocket knife to get it open.

Be very careful when you take it apart to note the sequence of the assembly 
of the gears.  Perhaps a photo or three would help.

Then when I put them back together I smacked the bent crimp with a 
screwdriver/hammer combination.
