Digitaly modulated speech with a protocol suporting to talk via a network of
repeaters on several bands and links prefereble on 23cm band and also partly
via the internet is possible. Also short text messages can be sent directley
or via the D-Star network. It is a bit like a SMS on the cell phone. One can
put in the callsign of the person you want to reach in the rig and D-star
conect you with him and you can talk. One can call CQ digitaly with text
message.
We have tried out to talk digital direct base-base and base - mobil and it
works quite good. Even with low signal strengt there is no background noice.
But when the signal gets to low the audio disapperar compleatly. We did not
use the function to put in a call in the radio. We just ran the
communication "open".

Can somebody define D-Star in a sentence or so? Is it and expanded APRS?
Thanks, Jim KG0KP
