[ICOM] Icom HM-7 mic specs??

I recently picked up a used Icom 746 and the hand mic supplied with it was
an HM-7, which I know isn't the stock mic for the 746.  It seems to work,
but I have to turn off the compression and cut back the mic gain, as the
preamplier seems stronger in the HM-7.  I know this mic was made for older
Icom radios, and did they need more preamplification in the mic than the
Icom 746 needed?
I do seem to get OK audio reports with it.
