[ICOM] Pro III question

Hi. I have a question concerning the PRO series of radios. I purchased a PRO
in Tokyo back when they first came out. I have been absolutely thrilled with
it ever since.

My question is this: are there any DEDICATED 6 Meter operators that have
upgraded from the original PRO to a PRO III and can comment on the 50 MHz
performance? I have yet to see this type of comparison, even reading all the e-Ham
reviews.

My radio can hear my antenna, so I kind of doubt the PRO III's improved
preamps would be of much value...
I have an arcing pole about 300 yds away, that is showing S-7 on the Pro's
S-meter, when connected to my HF 'fan' dipole. When the pole is quiet, is what I
was referring to 'hearing' the antenna. Obviously, it can REALLY hear it
arcing!! Yes, Florida Power has located the noise, now I just have to wait until
they fix it. Should be this week. I hope!

I have tried various external preamps and all it does in increase the noise
floor. I have compared it to my Drake TR-6 and they both hear the same. My
Drake is in excellent shape and I put the more modern JFETs in the front end.
Even my 761 with an ARR 6 Meter receive converter doesn't hear any better than
the PRO.

Am I spinning my wheels here? Yes, I do know the P III has other advantages
(like an NB that ACTUALLY works!). That's the only negative thing I could ever
say about the PRO, the NB just plain suc-s!

thanks

ron
