This is a requirement introduced by the _US_ _FCC_ when WiFi became popular. 
This was done to prevent users to connect high gain antennas to their WiFi 
equipment. Much good has it done, except bringing a lot of small companies 
specializing in these connectors to fruitition...

But meanwhile there are all types of adaptors. My company sells loads of them, 
from RP-SMA to RP-TNC to RP-N and Reverse-Thread-SMA with left hand circular 
polarity and blue/yellow stripes. 
It becomes even more interesting when you look at the miniature connectors on 
PCMCIA WiFi, GSM and UMTS cards. It seems as if every manufacturer invents 
his own connector type...
All in all it's a nice business. If you have them all on stock...
