Another alternative you have, Gary, is this cable sold by Radio Shack for 
use with their scanners.
model# 20-047  $29.99
It uses a USB port on your computer. I've used one for a long time with my 
746pro. I switched to it so as to free up my RS-232 port for other uses.
The software you use will still see it as being on an COM port.
What ever you end up doing - - have fun.
