I guess you could just "open it up" and then band restrictions
wouldn't be a problem. But not having service or warranty work
avail in NA would be a problem.
I am aware of the electronics shops area of Akihabara but not
with any individual store to ask about pricing or availability.
I had kinda thought with the Dollar to Yen exchange being what it
is I wouldn't save much money, if any, and that was the core of
my question. But as Adam points out, if they are selling the
domestic models only with no warranty then it does not sound like
a good idea.
As far as Pony's, it was way out of town at Fussa, where Yokota
Air Base is located. I had thought a radio store in Akihabara
might be better.
George, KJ6VU, has some info as well as Rich, 9M2CNC/G4ZFE on the
Rocket Ham Radio store on the below links but I can't find a web
site or email address for the store:
http://www.g4zfe.com/akihabara.html
http://www.qsl.net/kj6vu/radiostoresjapan.html
http://www.akiba.or.jp/index_e.html
I miss those days, every trip we were given shopping lists by the
non aviation types for hibachi pots (the BIG ones), pachinko
machines, electronic gear, cameras, etc. I would let a JA ham
working at Pony's what I needed as far as electronics and he
would have it ready for me when we arrived.
