[ICOM] DSP

I think the guy conceded the argument too easily, Adam...

Actually, the FT-102 did have a good receiver. Those 102's are not scrap
because
of poor RF performance... They have other issues... Not that I actually
believe a 102
could blow the doors off a 7800... Although, out of the box, they
outperformed my 781 which required a HP filter to attenuate BCB overload....
Probably because the 102 had an integral HP filter in the RX front end.

It's also worth remembering that as DSP creeps back from the detector to the
front-end... It isn't there yet... So high-performance Amateur products are
still hybrid analog/digital designs.

I really don't see any major improvement between my 746Pro vs. 781 except
for digital modes where the filter flexibility is terrific.

All in all, unlike you, I still don't see enough advantage to current DSP
implementations to replace the old 781! But I suspect we are nearly there...

>Yes, in fact I have heard several claims that an old Yaesu FT-102 will
>"blow the doors off an IC-7800." To which my response was: "Strange, I saw
>a whole bin of those things at our local electronics recycling firm a few
>days ago." Funny how that ended the debate...
