My thoughts backing up the Pro III for under $1,500.

1)  If you kicked in a few more dollars, get the IC-7000
and an antenna tuner.  It has the same kind of guts as the
Pro III, and you can go mobile.

2)  If it's a hard limit, then get the IC-706 MK IIG
with antenna tuner and the 1.9 Khz SSB filter.  If you
like CW, get the CW filter.

3)  You could start slumming and getting used rigs such
as the IC-751A, the 761 and the 765.  They're okay,
but with age comes the risk that they'll die before the
Pro III.
