Hi Dick,
The IC-746Pro, the IC-7000 and a good used IC-756Pro2 would all be excellent
choices.
A good IC-781 will cost you around $2500 - more than your target. Besides,
spares and repair service for the older radios are becoming problematical.
For myself, I would no longer accept an analogue HF transceiver (making an
exception for my IC703+).
Cheers for now, 73,

Subject: [ICOM] Backup ICOM Radio
I am looking for an ICOM HF transceiver as a base station backup for my
IC-756 Pro III.
I would like to stay under $1500. My first thought was a new IC-746 Pro,
but then I started thinking about all of the used 761, 781, 775 radios out
there (which I know absolutely nothing about).
So I guess my questions boils down to this: what is the best (in terms of
performance and reliability) ICOM HF transceiver I can buy, new or use, for
$1500 or less?
All suggestions and discussion appreciated.
73, Dick
