[ICOM] how to search archives?

Not true.
Go to http://www.w9wze.org/ 
At bottom of screen, center right, below the Hallicrafters name, is
"Search QTH.net lists". Click it on. Go to the "Select List" field and
click on Icom. Put in your keyword(s) and then click Go. This has been
available for several years at this site.

Actually Dick, we had an archive thread back in 2002 and you also pointed
out this site.
