[ICOM] PSK31 and 706MKIIG

I wouldn't say that high power PSK "isn't needed" - with all modes increased
range is produced by increased radiated power and receiver sensitivity.

I have no idea why amplify a phase modulated PSK signal is so problematic
though, but it is.

When psk first came out, several friends who were active on AMTOR tested it
and when the PSK31 started printing mostly garbage, we could always go on CW
and chat for maybe 15 or 20 minutes more before the signal went out
completely.

It is a myth that PSK31 is "better" than CW. It isn't, nor is QRP PSK
better than QRO PSK - IF you could make a transmitter that would produce a
signal with the same low distortion.

I'd personally love to see someone make an ultra linear (pure signal) 1.5 kW
PSK transmitter - it would be a very nice signal and have quite a range.

High power is not recommended for PSK because you don't need it. However,
there is nothing wrong with running the 706MKIIG at full power in full duty
cycle modes. They are rated to be run so, and I've runn full power RTTY for
years with mine - contest and ragchew. It gets very hot, but years now and
it just keeps ticking!

I like to jump on this because the Icoms are the only rigs I've ever noticed
that are rated at full power at 100% duty cycle - Most of the others
recommend reducing power to 50% or less. Even the PW-1 runs full KW at 100%
duty and stays cool too!

Go Icom!

P.S. For PSK, make sure you have NO deflection on your ALC meter, or you
will have a nasty signal that people will tell you about - if they can print
your call. ;-)
