this is a bit on modern lubricants, WD-40 is a compound used mainly as a
water displacer on ignition systems. The stuff i a waxy compound with a
kerosene like solvent. When the solvent goes away as they all usually do
the residue will or can freeze the shaft/s.
There is an oil/solvent that has been around for years-Marvel
Mystery Oil.
This is a good solvent to free up stuff and leaves a fair lubricant
behind.
Then we have the ultimate stuff for your oilcan, Mobil 1 in the 5W-20
grade, won't pick up moisture, won't freeze or boil out and better yet,
it is available all over.

Enuf of rants here, thanks.
