To All That Responded To My Post,
Please go back and read my email post as it says,
"This morning I began experimenting with the rig on "SSB" and was told
several times that the transmit audio had a harsh and over driven sound with
the speech processor on".
It amazes me that so many people could misread my post. Of course I would
not run speech processing on the digital modes.
It also appears that some don't understand the concept that a "properly"
adjusted RF speech processing level will increase average talk power and
allow a successful QSO to be completed under marginal conditions, while at
the same time allowing for a good audio report.
Many hams have a poor opinion of speech processing much like vertical
antennas but it's urban legend stuff. If either are not set up correctly
they will not work correctly.
Unfortunately the IC-718 has a fixed processing level of approximately 12 db
which is to high, so the bad audio reports on SSB came with the mic gain set
low at 30 on a scale of 00-100, with virtually no ALC movement.

Subject: IC-718 Speech Processor
Last year I purchased a new IC-718 for digital modes only operation. This
morning I began experimenting with the rig on SSB and was told several times
that the transmit audio had a harsh and over driven sound with the speech
processor on. Unfortunately the processor level can't be adjusted on the
outside of the rig.
Has anybody popped the covers and made an adjustment to the speech
processing? If so can you tell where the adjustment pot is? I have the
schematics but have some vision issues and can't locate the adjustment on
it.
