Hi Tom,

The Mic Gain control should be set so that the ALC meter reading reaches the
middle of the ALC zone. Excessive ALC action will cause the compressor to
distort.

Mic Gain will normally be at 20 to 50% with the compressor on.

Please refer to p. 27, IC-718 User Manual.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [ICOM] IC-718 Speech Processor

Last year I purchased a new IC-718 for digital modes only operation. This
morning I began experimenting with the rig on SSB and was told several times
that the transmit audio had a harsh and over driven sound with the speech
processor on. Unfortunately the processor level can't be adjusted on the
outside of the rig.

Has anybody popped the covers and made an adjustment to the speech
processing? If so can you tell where the adjustment pot is? I have the
schematics but have some vision issues and can't locate the adjustment on
it.
