[ICOM] 751 vs 751a

Hi John,
WHATEVER the difference(s) may be, they DO share one thing in common, i.e.
that infamous memory battery back-up that needs replacement every 10
years...failure to do so results in the poor thing forgetting whether it's a
transceiver, or a digital toaster!
I have the "A" version here, & installed a Radio Shack battery holder
inside --- I paralleled the wire leads from it to the board holding the
battery, & whenever I replace the lithium memory back-up, I first install a
pair of 1.5-volt pen cells into the holder, to ensure memory is sustained
while the lithium unit is swapped-out...works like a charm, & I've sapped
the battery twice already, since buying the rig, new, in 1989.
BTW, the 751A --- and, I'm sure, the original 751 --- is a GREAT CW
transceiver. I love it, and from comments heard, they can acquired for VERY
attractive prices on the used market to-day. It's an EXCELLENT back-up
radio, if nothing else!
