Way back when my Heath SB-401 gave up and I decided (wife approved) to go
with a new radio, I approached the local dealers.
Me: "I am going to buy a new radio, and I will spend around $3000" (this
was about 1992)
He: "Good, come on down"
Me: "But I have to be sure the receiver is better than what I have, an
SB-303"
He: "How you gonna tell that?"
Me: "At your convenience, and with your permission, I will bring my radio
and an antenna splitter in to your show room, connect your radio and my
radio to the same antenna and do a side by side comparison"
He: Long pause. "OK,,,,, but don't bother other customers"
Me: "When would be the best day/time when I might be the only customer
present?"
It worked. The first potential radio was deaf. The second potential radio
was almost as good as the 303. The Icom 765 was as good as the 303 and if I
used my imagination I could actually hear stuff on it that the 303 could
not.
This method will not work if you gotta have the least expensive radio at the
cheapest price and are not a serious buyer. And don't kill it by kicking
tires at your local dealer and then saving a few pennies by going someplace
else.

Hi Tim,
Given that this is true, how can one tell whether
something has a good receiver or not, other than by
using it? It seems that the numbers are very limited,
then. And many of us can't afford to be the guinea
pig for new radios that come out.
