Not the right "Compandering". What you read applies to
analogue-to-digital conversion on telephone circuits. The
earlier digital phone lines didn't do it.
To "Compress" the amplitude of audio signals, and to
"Expand" them later makes it possible to more efficiently
use the amplitude spectrum, and raise the Average Power
of the signal while it's being sent from one place to another.
Most ham radio transceivers have a "COMP" button that
turns this feature on and off. You might want to use it on
voice, but not so much on data signals. Since it works off
the level of the input audio, and controls the gain of the
audio amplifier, if it's maladjusted it can cause the mic gain
to run way up when no one's talking, and the receive end
hears all the noise in the room where the mic is. In your case
the companding action, if there is any, could be running
the mic gain way up when you speak low, and the mic gain
might not enjoy being run way up.
