I had a similar problem where my 706 would shut down, but only when I 
transmitted on the 20-meter band.  The radio is mounted in my truck with the 
control head remoted.  I solved the problem permantly by adding a ferrite on 
the remote control cable.  I was able to make a loop in the cable and get 
two turns thru the clamshell ferrite.  Good luck with your problem.
