Alcohol.

After a few shots, you won't mind the display at all.

Actually, many of the LCD displays have a rubber connector that rests on the
circuit board.  The solder oxidizes, and you lose segments.  Carefully
dis-assemble it, and wipe it down with come good cleaner.  I use technical
alcohol or Blue Shower 1677.  That should do it.
