         Before you conclude that, try adjustingPBT (assuming the 775 
has PBT) to 150-200 Hz.  I
thought the 1.8 kHz filters in my FT-1000MP were
useless until I learned this.  Same applies
for the Ten-Tec Orion's 1.8 kHz filter.  In the
MP, the menu adjustment was called "R LSB CAR"
and "R USB CAR".  In Orion it is "PBT".  I am not
sure what it may be called in the 775 but perhaps
someone else can tell you.

         With PBT properly adjusted, you can copy
SSB down to extremely low DSP bandwidths for
contests (e.g. ~1500 Hz).
