That's just the same impression here, when I tested the IC-R20. Superb on VHF, 
crappy on LW/MW, mediocre on HF. 

My US$20 kitchen radio has a better reception on LW/MW and HF. But then it 
does not scan, it does not have zillions of memories, it does not have an LC 
display, no dual receive, no recording, not CAT control etc. etc.

When customers call me I explain to them that the IC-R20 is probably the best 
handheld scanner out there - for VHF/UHF. For serious MW/LW/HF listening they 
should look for something different.
