[ICOM] Icom 706 on HF

John,
I have the MKIIG version that I use with a OCF windom
cut for 80m.  Using a LDG at100-pro auto antenna tuner
I am able to tune 160m-6m on the windom.  I have also
used it on 6m with a small yagi, a moxon, and 2m with a 
halo.  As far as a comparison between the original 706 and
the MKIIG I cannot tell you.  Best thing I can say is get on
the air and see what reports you get.
