I have been using a variation of the G5RV (102 Feet to 300 ohm twin lead
to 75 ohm coax) for quite a number of years. I have found it to be a
good wide range (of frequencies) antenna for both DXing and contesting.
Although not long enough, properly installed, I have worked 160m with
this version. It has also performed reasonably on 6m.
I normally use a manual tuner as I have found that most internal
automatic tuners do not have, depending on the band desired, sufficient
range to obtain a reasonable match under most operating conditions.
The G5RV has been a very flexible antenna for portable operations. The
version I build (not my design) has been to several countries with me
and has performed, within its' limits, admirably.
I won the IARU 'test in 4X in 2000 (SO LP Mixed) using it for operation
on the lower bands. It was also useable on 6m working countries all over
the Mediterranean from Israel to the U.K.
