Dear John:

I've had a 706 IIG in my car for the last three years.

I am an NCT, so my usage reflects that.

I'm mostly on 2 meters, probably 80% of my hamming time. Here in NYC,
440 also sees some use.

Frequently, I am using it as a scanner for local public safety, so many
trips will be the 706 scanning a set of police and fire frequencies.
Clearly overkill for a scanner, but a useful function.

I also use it for TV audio at times-and enjoy listening to my family's
flights arrive on AM on the Aircraft band, or my wife's train check in
before hitting the train station.

Lastly, I have a CB whip on the HF side. That gets me Channel 19 (no I
don't xmit), or better still, shortwave monitoring. I do a lot of driving,
and it's nice to listen to CBC or Radio Havana for a change of pace.

I love the 706, the swiss army knife of radio, and don't see a need at
this time to upgrade to a 7000. I can afford the 7000, but the only real
flaw in the 706, not scanning above 470 mhz, is not rectified in the 7000.
I could use that in the NYC metro area.
