[ICOM] IC-756pro RX ANT switching

No Adam I haven't tried another antenna jack. I'll try that this
evening. The antenna does seem to work, however an S9+10 signal on the
windom gets reduced to S1 or less but with much less noise. If I remove
power from the active antenna the signals go away. I think I need to
live with it a little more.

Another question Adam do you know if the mute switch on the external
keypad described on page 2-6 of the 7800 manual makes the front end of
the 7800 safe from high levels of RF from nearby antennas? I think you
said the other day you don't own a 7800 as yet but I know you've studied
the radio and may know the answer.

Julio, W4HY

Hi Julio,

Yes, "a wee bit deef" is Scottish slang for "deaf as a post."

On the IC-7800, the RX-ANT IN sockets are connected to the RX-ANT OUT
sockets via coax jumpers. If there is a fault in the RX-ANT signal path,
it will degrade reception via the main ANT socket as well, as the
received signal flow is from the main ANT socket, via the T/R relay, to
RX-ANT OUT, then via the jumper to RX-ANT IN.

Your active antenna may be defective. Have you checked it on another
radio, or on another antenna socket on the IC-7800?

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Adam when you say deef are we talking completely dead on the receive
port?

The reason I'm asking is I just started using one of the new active
receive antennas from DX Engineering through the receive port on the
7800 and was taken aback by the reduced signal strength from that
antenna. I reason that if the 7800 has a fuse and it was open I wouldn't
hear anything. This is my first use of a receive antenna and I wasn't
expecting such a reduction of signal strength.

Hi Dave,

1/R and 2/R switch the receive RF signal path from ANT1 or ANT2 to the
RX-ANT input. If the input is still "a wee bit deef" (like auld Mrs.
McGregor), the RF fuse DS111 (Part No.HRS-4160A) on the RF UNIT board
may have gone open. (IC-756Pro Service Manual, p. 10-8).

You can download the IC-756Pro service manual from Marcucci, mods.dk or

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi all
Wonder if someone could tell me how to switch to receive from the RX
ANT port? I've been thro' the manual 2 or 3 times and cannot find a
proper instruction for this. The antenna function switch toggles 1, 2,
and if held down 1/R and 2/R but neither of these activate the RX ANT
port?

Many tnx in advanced
 73 Dave
