Years ago, the local power company installed a replacement
street light at the house down the side street of our house.
Instead of a shade that deflected light mostly downward,
they installed what was basically a flat metal sheet above
the lamp. The light from the bulb now shone directly into
the bedroom that my brother and I shared.

Repeated complaints to the power company went unheeded.
Then the lamp was shattered during the night. It began to be
broken shortly after each replacement. After three or four
replacements, the shade miraculously developed a downward
tilt that kept the light from shining into our bedrooms.
EUREKA!!! Lamps now lasted for years instead of days!!!

My brother never admitted to being a "stone thrower" but
I am still occasionally reminded of his pitching accuracy.

OG&E here in Oklahoma City seems to be aware that arcing is
a loss of saleable power and will come out and they will
survey things to determine source. Years ago, they did
that in response to a noise problem I had. They located
the source to a private residence a block away. I never
did anything because after a couple of more months, the
noise quit. Bad thermostat, bell transformer, aquarium
heater??? I'll never know.

Commonwealth Edison basically told me to go ahead and call the
FCC.... they did not want to hear me complain about their inaction on
my requests for help. It had been 4 months after their tech confirmed
the problem and wrote it up.
It's going on 1 year for a March 05 complaint,, an April work
order,,, and NO REPAIR..

Bill,

I have been dealing with Commonwealth Edison for years with power line noise
problems.
My experience has been about the same as yours.
Years ago I wrote to the FCC . Commonwealth Edison did clear up a few
problems at the time, but new sources of noise keep cropping up that they don't
fix. One technician said that noise is a very low priority for them. He said
that the only thing that they care about is power outages.
