Mac,
Don't overlook the coax cable feeding the antenna. I once had some coax that the shield had corroded to black and it was opening under transmit. I would be chatting along on 10 meters and all of a sudden the rig would fold back in output power and the reverse power would go to almost full output power. The antenna was a Mosley 310C.
Took me a bit to figure it out as the Drake W-4 I had always shown a good match.
