Mac and all: Once you have checked the usual suspects, (tuner, antenna etc) for problems, and found none, another possibility is  diode failure whch can cause the PA's to oscillate when on 6 meters. Pa oscillation has been known to occur on 756PRO's around 47 Mhz, yet all checks OK on a dummy load. I am not sure if 746's have been know for this failure or not, but its something to consider if no other cause can be found. Good Luck, Larry K4LXV.
