Tom,
I use the 1.9 (or is it 1.8) kHz filter in mine and it works great when
conditions warrent. Of course, the stock 2.4 is available when copy is
"armchair" quality, just a push of the "FIL' menu button. The narrower
filter is somewhat restrictive, but just what you need if near-in QRM is
trouble.
A second benefit is that the 1.9 filter becomes the standard filter in CW
mode. It really helps there as well. I also have the 250 Hz, but if I did
it again, I think I would do the 500 Hz since it's easy to tune by folk, or
lose them when reducing BW with the 250.

Subject: [ICOM] Best filter for 706 SSB
I need better signal to noise on the my IC706 mkIIg.
75m is where I really need to lower the noise floor.
Which filter would be the best choice? I want to keep nice sounding audio
though.
My puzzle is that it is my understanding that the "no-filter" bandpass of
the 706 is ~2.4 kHz.
The FL-103 is a 2.8 kHz filter. Is that one going to offer ANY improvement?
The FL-223 is a 1.9 kHz filter. Does this filter close up the audio too
much?
Comments appreciated.
73 to all
