Hi Dick,

As far as I am aware, there never was an IC-761A. Also, I have never seen a
"new logo" IC-761, although interestingly, Frank mentions that there was
such a version. It is possible that the logo change - part of a decision by
Icom to "jazz up" its image a little - went into effect whilst some IC-761's
were still in the pipeline.

Icom was in the midst of IC-765 development at the time of the logo change
(1988-89, as I recall.) The plan was to discontinue the IC-761 line, and
replace it with the IC-765. Then that silly PBT patent suit blew up, causing
a delay in the release of the IC-765 (because Icom had to remove the PBT
feature in a hurry). The IC-765 was finally released early in 1990. 

The IC-761 and IC-765 are two very different radios. The IC-761 is
essentially an IC-751A in a larger chassis, with more IF filter slots, a
built in PS-35 and AT-150. It has selectable IF Shift/PBT, whereas the
original (Series 1, old logo) IC-751A had PBT only.

The IC-765 is a completely different radio. It has a redesigned front end,
including a much better 1st mixer. Its DDS synthesiser has considerably
higher spectral purity than the PLL used in the 761. The DDS has 1 Hz
resolution, and will display 10 Hz steps. It also has a
microprocessor-controlled autotuner. The IF board is very different from
that of the IC-761, but unfortunately an FL-30/FL-96 pair replaced the
superb FL-80/FL-44A combo used so successfully in the IC-761 and IC-751A. As
mentioned earlier, PBT was now absent. 

The FL-30's in early IC-765's had severe passband ripple, which showed up as
a severe loss of "highs" in the received audio when PBT was reinstated. This
ripple was corrected in later IC-765's (S/N > 3000, as I recall.)

Along with the IC-765, Icom released a Series 2 (new logo) IC-751A with IF
shift. This version still had the FL-80/FL-44A, so full performance was
restored by reactivating PBT (see this link).

The patent suit was settled in 1991, and Icom launched the Series 3 IC-751A
(new logo, PBT). Regrettably, they did not put PBT, or the FL-80/FL-44A,
back into the IC-765.

Did the 761 go through a logo change during manufacturer as did the 751A?

Was there an 'A' model of the 761?  Is there anything in it's appearance
that designages 'A'?
