Of course it will depend on the type of operating you plan to do.  But here is my very subjective reply:  I started with a 718 and sold it  along with a couple of VHF-FM radios to purchase the 706 MKIIG.  I did this because at the time I really wanted to operate HF mobile.  The end result is that I wish I had the 718 back. It offers good performance and was a lot easier to use. I put the INRAD 400hz filter in mine for CW and was very happy with it.  If you can do without the VHF (especially 6 meters) and the 10 meter FM, go for the 718.
