Many circuits of dimmer controls for radio display lamps use a linear series
pass transistor scheme to vary the voltage applied. So you have two "different
strains", one because the heat produced by the series pass transistor (affects
itself and the circuit board, if not also to very close components located
around it) when you use the lower light settings. But, on the other hand, this
strains less the lamps.
