Hi Guys,
My thoughts - I have both the 781 and Pro3 side by side and compare them to each other and to an FT-1000D all the time. Started with the Pro2 and 781 combo. The Pro3 receiver is a substantial improvement over the Pro2 in a number of areas. For me, I need a noise blanker that actually works on line noise - both the 781 and the Pro3 do that. With the Pro3, I have come to believe that it is probably as good as the 781, however, there are some things I like about the 781 better and some things I like about the Pro3 better. Example: filters - I like the 781 filters (tight CW filters) a little better than the Pro3 only because of the way they sound under crowded band conditions. I like the analog sound a bit better than the digital sound. I like the band scope on the Pro3 better - it is simply more useful. I like the single functions knobs on the 781 better, simpler to operate. Both radios work perfectly with the PW-1. The FT-1000D is a different animal - I like its diversity reception and I think its narrow crystal filters sound a tad bit better than the 781.
So, all three radios have their strenghs and a few weaknesses too. I'm keeping all of them.
