Actually - if you take it apart all the way, the best is super-lube grease.
Super-Lube is a silicone-based PTFE (Teflon) grease.
I once decided to find out how reliable my combat-pistol match pistol was
with super-lube. I went 3 full matches, over 800 shots without cleaning or
re-lubing it. I was going to go for 1000 shots, but I just couldn't stand
it any longer so I cleaned it.
Super-Lube has been combat-proven in Iraq also. It doesn't collect grit
like regular grease. My son used it in both his sniper rifle and his M-4.
That said, if you do not dis-assemble it all the way, an oil is a better
choice for getting into the shaft area.
I wish you could see a small vacuum pump bearing on my desk at work.
Admittedly, it spins at 3600 RPM (ICOM tuner knobs are a bit slower). But
WD-40 didn't help it for long. About 3 days after getting a shot of WD-40 -
it seized up for good. Since we replace the bearings ourselves in the
plant, we could afford that little experiment.
However, if you keep re-applying it every few days, it DOES work. I would
not hesitate to use it for an emergency to get you home etc.... Just not
for a long-term job.
Just curious - what is the maximum RPM rating of an ICOM tuning knob?
