When I bought my first 706, a MK2 model, I took an actual size
picture(used in Icom's ads) and moved it around the inside of my
truck('95F-150) till I found a spot where it was visible, accessible,
and safe. Then I looked for ways to mount it. I know, you don't think
you can have all of that, but try the main criteria first then be
creative for affixing the head unit. Mine ended up being easy as it fit
on a punch out panel for some aux. switches for an accy. I did not have.
You didn't say what you are wanting to install it in but think about
supplies from unlikely places. Sewing centers for one. They have unique
fasteners for material and different variety's of Velcro. Possibility a
HD stretch fabric or belt that hooks onto the defroster vent and comes
down and hooks under the dash. Use a color coordinated fabric so it
blends in as much as possible. Attach a plate of some sort to the belt
that you can fasten the head unit to. Another thing to look at is the
hands free mic approach by using a small tape recorder foot switch on
the floor where the old dimmer control used to be. Plug this into the
head for the ptt and use a headset mic hooked up to the back of the main
body. This lessens pull on the head unit. Possible a U/D switch wired in
the back plug for freq/band adjustments. Common sense please, no flames,
one ear phone and just two wires to the head unit. Anyway good luck. I
hope this stimulates some creativity so you have a great installation.
73, Rick.
