I have a 7800 on 20 and 40 meters at the moment. Take a look at the results of
CQWW Phone in August 2006 CQ Magazine for 20 meters (and 40 meters) - Multi
Multi USA if you want to see how we did with the 7800/781 combo.
The 7800s are used at the #1 position for those two bands and a 781 is used in
the #2 position. So the operators on those two bands get lots of #1 vs #2
comparisons. There is a noticeable difference in receiver performance, which you
would expect (15 years of newer technology). The 7800 DSP works great and the
roofing filters really clean up the passband. All in all the 7800 is the best
radio I have ever used (confirm Jan's comments).
There are rumors that INRAD is working on a 781 narrow roofing filter. If the
rumor is true, this would help under tough contest situations and make the 781
even better. We have no plans to change out the 781s.
The price difference of a good used 781 vs a 7800 must be taken into account as
well. The 781 is rock solid and a great performer for us.
As the 781s and 7800s don't travel as well (we took two 781s to Finland in 2002
and San Francisco in 1996), we used a IC765 (with the INRAD roofing filter) and
a IC756ProIII in Brazil last month at WRTC. The 765 has a bullet proof front end
(much like the 781). There were several times where the DSP on the ProIII really
helped pull signals out of the QRN on 80 meters among VERY strong local signals
(we were listening to the same station at the same time using a receiver antenna
multiplex sharing system). Again, I was impressed by the ProIII.
I have used the Kenwoods and the Yaesu's, then sold them all.
Great radios, service and support. Icom has it all 100%!
73!
