With all due respect to Jan, I know what I am talking about when it comes to
high
performance radio equipment.

Winning 3 out of the 4 major DX contests last season in Multi Multi is NOT easy
at all!
I am 2 miles from the Ohio border and we beat the BIG guys on the EAST coast!

To do this you need GREAT operators and the BEST receiver you can get.
My game is winning DX contests, so I use the BEST radios I can possibly find!

The 775DSP had leakage issues between the A and B VFOs ( known 775 bug).
The 775 front ends did not hold up in big signal, big time contesting.
The 775 receiver phase noise on 40 and 80 meters when the band is full was
terrible.
The phantom bleeps and bloops drove my team crazy.

The 781 front end is crunch proof and the selectivity is very good.
The 7800s are even better (as Jan pointed out).

Real world experience trumps lab data. Hundreds of big signals with very weak
ones that we want to work!
Try that with a lab generator!
Bottom Line - If the 775 was a better receiver, I would have twelve 775s instead
of twelve 781s!

If you are not putting the 775 into busy contest (high signal levels - low band)
environments, then it will work fine for you.
Be careful of VFO leakage when you run split. This problem may be fixed now, so
try it first.

73!
