not pay for itself
in the extra performance you buy. Would spending an
extra $800 to upgrade to a 756PRO or FT1000MP really
be worth it?
Wow John, you and I are in the same boat. I am in the 2nd year of putting my
Daughter thru an $18k/yr College. Last year, I bought a new MP MKV Field,
put the INRAD roofing filter, and a couple of INRAD CW/SSB filters in it. I
kept my ICOM 746 also, as a 2nd rig. My antennas consist of G5RV @ 50',
tribander @ 30' and a 160 L @ 50'. Using a Heath SB-1000 amp also. Not much. but
enough to have fun with.
After using the MP for a whole contest season, making around 4k QSO's with
it, I determined it was NOT worth the extra $1,000 over my 746. As a matter of
fact, assuming all things were the same, I actually preferred the sound, and
selectivity of the 746!! Now, the 2nd VFO, and other bells and whistles on
the MP were neat, but, not $1k neat.
Now, I sold the MP, bought a 2nd 746-non pro, and am going to invest the
"spare" $1k into a tower.
