An old engineer (my now SK elmer actually) once told me this.

The most expensive radio with a 12 inch spaghetti noodle for an antenna will
not work at all.  But a fair radio on a great antenna will work the world.
$$$ for $$$, work on your antennas first.

I have found his advice to be good, although I must admit to not following
it sometimes.
