Hi Jim,

My 765 started acting exactly as you describe.
The fix cost zero bucks but does require some
digging into the insides of the rig.

There is a current limiting resistor in the power
supply of the radio. It consists of a bar of
copper about 1.5" long and about 1/8" square. The
fix consists of resoldering it on each end. One
thing to be careful of is to not solder beyond
the small hole drilled in each end of the bar. If
I remember correctly, the power supply is
accessible from the bottom and is located on the
left side with the front of the rig facing you.
Also, it's buried under another circuit board.

It was a bit of a chore to gain access to the
power supply but once there the fix was quick and easy.

PS: Icom has a trouble shooting section on their
web site and the fix is described there.
