Hi!

I have had a problem with my SP-23. The frame of the speaker element is made of plastic and is very thin. When receiving, the frame came in to resonance and created a mekanic buzzing sound. The problem was greatest at CW but could also appear in SSB. I tried sevaral ways of stabilize the frame but did not succeed. Finaly I decided to change the speaker element. I choosed a 100 milimeter Audax HP100G0 HIFI element, but any element in the right size can be used.

To do the modificatiion, remoove the front cloth cover. It can be pulled off just by pulling it straight forward. Take the top cover off. Remove the wires to the element. Remove the speaker. You need to remove all plastic sticking out backwards on the front frame that the speaker is attached to. I used a Dremmel miniature drilling machine with a sandpaper grinder shaped as a cylinder mounted on a rubber roll. Other ways may be possible. Then meassure out new mounting holes for the speaker element end drill them. Then from the front side countersink (is this the right terme?) the holes and use screws with countersink (is this the right word?) and mount the speaker element. Then put the front cloth cover back and the top cover.

I find the SP-23 with the Audax HIFI element slightly better than a unmodified SP-20 . I listen a lot to a medium wave station in Holland (PA-land) at 1008 kHz and enjoy the new frequency range of the modified SP-23 though it's smaler size.

If anyone has any thougts on my English in the description, please let me know before I post this modification on www.mods.dk !!!
