[ICOM] Seeking your wisdom...

Howdy.

I have quietly been looking for an older receiver for a few months.
The wife and I like to sit by the fireplace and listen to old radio dramas
in the evenings. Yeah - I know - with an R-9000 what more could I want?
Well, I wanted something nice for the living room. The R-9000 lives in
another room, and it is too big to move around. For this new radio, AM-Bcst
(talk radio) is a MUST. SW-Bcst a nice touch. USB-LSB-CW for utility
listening OK - but not a deal buster either way. Older tube radio would be
nice, but again not a deal buster either way. But it needs to be
presentable and have good clean AM sound to earn a place in the living room.

A good friend offered me a Collins 75S1 with a crystal pack. It was
such a great deal I couldn't pass it up. BUT - it didn't (and CANT as I
understand it) receive AM-Bcst. So I did pass it by.

I now have an opportunity to pick up an ICOM IC-R72. I have
downloaded the operators and service manuals. It looks like a solid little
radio. Other than the warmth of the glowing tubes, it more than meets my
desires. It actually looks like (as it was designed to be I guess) a step
up from the R-70 and R-71.

Anyone have one? Any experience with one - good or bad? Anything
to watch out for? Desirable accessories (it has the UI-8 in it already).
Problems or experiences?

You don't see many for sale, which tells me either they are keepers,
or there were never many sold to begin with (like the Kenwood R-820).

Thanks everyone. Y-all have a great weekend. My son and I are
hiking Guadalupe Peak Sunday. Maybe you will hear us DXing VHF-UHF from the
peak during the hike.
