It all depends on what your interests are in ham radio.  That's why
you've gotten so many varied opinions on your original question.

If you're just a casual operator and interested in ragchewing on SSB,
then audio fidelity might be an important issue.  I feel that my
IC756Pro3 is excellent in that respect.

If you're a DXer and/or contester, then IMD3 and BDR would be
importantant issues for you.  In the conservatively-priced radios today,
the Elecraft K2 excels here.

If you're a CW operator, then selectivity might the the criteria you're
interested in.  Here the IC-746Pro or IC-756Pro series are excellent
choices.

I've long felt that the IC-746Pro gives the most bang for the buck.  I've
seen them recently advertised new for $1499 including power supply.
