Jim,
Many of the current service manuals are actually published electronically.
The printed versions are reproduction of a PDF file orginal. Pagemaker
(Adobe's publishing program) produces files that are used directly to "rip"
a publication in commercial printing.
Thus the reds are redder, the blacks are blacker in the electronic file.
But on older manuals which were scanned (photocopied) as pictures, you're
correct.
However now, with electronic publishing - the best copy is the electronic
one.

That is not entirely true.
The service manual schematics have voltage readings on each device. If
you have a poor reproduction of a service manual, the voltages are
nearly impossible to see. In the original service manual, they were
printed in red. Red does not photocopy well when the majority color is
black.

Gary
I have both of the 765 manuals and can report
that the schematics in the Service Manual are the
same as those in the User Manual. So if you have
the User Manual with its schematics, the
downloaded Service Manual will suffice nicely for everything else.
