[ICOM] Good effective noise blankers

GM, John,

You too?? My IC-746PRO does the exact same thing. Since I live in a
row house, I have multitudes of homes on the same AC line, most with
lousy conx, with people owning stuff radiating like multiple quasars.

I have been thru the power company routine, with indifferent to no
results, finally having to take the whole shebang to the FCC about
"unintentional radiators", but that is another story, enough to make you
tear your hair (what hair--hi--) out.... The noise is so bad, that it
wipes out any remote synch on any WWV- slaved clocks, and a power line
noise monitor just about peaks outside.

Anyhow, I know exactly what you are talking about, the rig just doesn't
have a good noise blanker, you either get recieve, or you get that
hollow (as you put it "aurora like' noise)... mine seems to kill the
sensitivity entirely.... it doesn't kill the noise, it just acts like a
huge attenuator.

I too, would appreciate any answers.. I am thinking of going to a
different rig, is the 756PRO series any different? The new one 7800? is
at this time, completely out of my price range, having just made a
substantial investment to please the XYL, and maintain my property
value--hi-- (home improvement, nothing to do with communications, sadly)
, maybe someday.... I also would like one that doesn't have that 5Mhz
bandpass filter problem on the xmit, since I use mine for MARS ops, and
I always feel like I'm running the finals right on the edge when
operating in that freq range.

I like Icom, always been vy happy with them, but the noise blanker and
NR leaves something to be desired... It took me a while to get used to
DSP in the first place, coming from an analog radio, but once I got used
to the idiosyncracies of DSP, I was amazed...that being said, the NB/NR
and the notch filtering are kind of screwy... I have never been too
happy with their operation... so if you or anyone has any answers, pse
fire away..

I live in a pretty noise location so I need the noise blanker to cut down the noise, but on the rigs I have used recently they also hurt the receive. On CW I can hear loud stations 10khz away or more with the NB on-coming through as a raspy, aurora sounding signal.
