My first ICOM (an IC230) was larger than most contemporary radios and had
only 10 watt output. It covered 146~148 MHz and contained helical resonators in
the front end. With that radio, I never knew what intermod was. It cost
almost $400, new, in the late-70's.

The demand for wideband coverage, low price and a small physical package all
combine to give us the current intermod problems which we complain about. The
price of a current radio, plus a band-pass or notch filter, is still less
much less than the (unadjusted for inflation) price of a VHF-FM radios of the
70's and 80's. A filter, when necessary, can be mounted between antenna and
radio, even outside of the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The total
physical volume (radio+filter) is less than that of many older radios. (Anybody
else remember the size of the Clegg VHF-FM transceivers?)

While I could live without broadband coverage, I prefer not to and buy
filters instead. I like having a NWS receiver in the car as part of my VHF or
V/Uhf transceiver.

Like so many other things, I get what I am willing to pay for.
