looks like upon closer look  the 271a does go to full power in FM 
mode.... or appears to....on ssb it will go to full power but only as 
modulated....as though
the rf PWR control was disconnected....

discovered an interesting phenomena which may indicate something else....

in fm  appears to work ok , modulation just the appropriate audio , 
controlled by the mic gain control....however: ssb sounds good also,,,,,

switching to ssb or cw mode the sq will not 'close' , and the s meter 
stays pinned to the right. Not as my  companion 471 does....

I apologize  for not pulling the radio and getting  inside yet,.,...

guess i prefer to sleuth it first and then confirm my genius conclusions.
